URA TIN Registration Uganda 2026: How to Get a TIN Number (Step by Step)

A URA TIN (Tax Identification Number) is the single most important number for doing anything official in Uganda's economy โ€” from opening a bank account to registering a company, importing goods, or landing a government contract. This guide walks through the exact www.ura.go.ug registration process for both individuals and companies in 2026, the documents you need, how long it takes, and how to recover a TIN you have lost. Registration is completely free.

What is a URA TIN number?

A Tax Identification Number is a unique 10-digit number issued by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to identify every taxpayer โ€” whether an individual, a company, an NGO, or a partnership. It is issued free of charge and does not expire. Once you have a TIN, it stays with you for life; you should never hold more than one.

Your TIN links every tax obligation you have โ€” PAYE, VAT, income tax, withholding tax, customs โ€” to one profile on the URA system. Banks, URSB, the NGO Bureau, and government procurement portals all verify your TIN before they will deal with you, which is why it is usually the first thing anyone setting up in Uganda needs.

TIN vs NIN: what is the difference?

These two are often confused. Your NIN (National Identification Number) is your national identity number, issued by NIRA and printed on your National ID card. Your TIN is your tax number, issued by URA. When you apply for an individual TIN, URA validates your identity against your NIN โ€” so your name and details must match your National ID exactly, or the application will fail.

What you need a TIN for

Documents required to register for a TIN

Applicant typeDocuments you need
Individual (Ugandan)Valid National ID (NIN). That is the core requirement โ€” your NIN drives the whole application.
Individual (foreigner)Passport, plus work permit or special pass where applicable, and a Ugandan contact address.
Company / businessURSB Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum & Articles of Association, and the individual TINs of all directors.
NGONGO Bureau registration certificate, URSB registration, and directors' TINs.
PartnershipPartnership deed, URSB registration, and the TINs of all partners.

Before you start: every director or partner must already have their own individual TIN before you can register a company or partnership TIN. Sort out the individuals first, then the entity.

How to register for an individual TIN (step by step)

The fastest route for most people is online through the URA portal. You can complete it yourself in well under an hour.

  1. Go to www.ura.go.ug and open the e-Services area, then choose TIN Registration. (You can also download the individual registration form, DT-1001, and complete it offline before uploading.)
  2. Select Individual as the taxpayer type and confirm you are registering for a new TIN.
  3. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your National ID, your NIN, date of birth, and gender.
  4. Add your contact details โ€” a working email and phone number. Your TIN will be sent to this email, so make sure it is correct.
  5. Enter your source of income (employment, business, rental, etc.) and your physical and postal address in Uganda.
  6. Review everything, then submit. URA validates your NIN with NIRA and, once it matches, issues your TIN โ€” usually within one working day, sometimes within hours.

If you are not comfortable online, you can walk into any URA service office or a TaxHub with your National ID and register in person at no cost.

How to register for a company or NGO TIN (non-individual)

  1. On www.ura.go.ug, open TIN Registration and select Non-Individual.
  2. Enter the entity name exactly as it appears on the URSB Certificate of Incorporation.
  3. Upload the Certificate of Incorporation and the Memorandum & Articles of Association (plus the NGO Bureau certificate for NGOs).
  4. Capture the details of all directors / partners, including their individual TINs.
  5. Enter the business's physical address, nature of business, and expected turnover.
  6. Submit. Because URA reviews the incorporation documents, a non-individual TIN typically takes one to three working days.

How to recover a lost or forgotten TIN

You do not re-register โ€” holding two TINs is not allowed and causes problems later. Instead, retrieve your existing one:

Once verified, URA resends your TIN to your registered email or reads it to you directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is a URA TIN free in Uganda?

Yes. URA issues a TIN free of charge โ€” you never pay URA for the number. Anyone charging you is charging for assistance, not for the TIN itself.

How long does TIN registration take?

An individual TIN is often issued within one working day once your NIN is validated. A company or NGO TIN usually takes one to three working days.

Can a foreigner get a TIN in Uganda?

Yes. A foreign individual registers using a passport and, where applicable, a work permit or special pass. Foreign-owned companies register as non-individuals using their URSB documents. See our guide on opening a bank account in Uganda as a foreigner, which needs a TIN.

What documents do I need for a TIN?

Individuals need a valid National ID (NIN). Companies need the URSB Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum & Articles of Association, and directors' individual TINs.
