Trade Unions in Uganda
Workers in Uganda have a constitutional right to form and join trade unions, governed by the Labour Unions Act 2006 and the Employment Act 2006.
Employer Obligations When Unions Are Present
- Recognition: If a union represents more than 50% of employees in a bargaining unit, you must recognise it
- Collective bargaining: Negotiate in good faith on wages, working conditions, and benefits
- Information sharing: Provide relevant information to union representatives
- Check-off: If employees request, deduct union dues from salaries and remit to union
- Non-interference: Do not interfere with union activities or discriminate against union members

Industrial Action — Strikes Uganda
- Prior notice of at least 14 days must be given to employer and Labour Commissioner
- Mediation and conciliation must have been attempted
- Essential services workers (health, water, electricity) have restricted strike rights
- Illegal strikes — without proper notice — can be grounds for disciplinary action
