Types of Construction Insurance Uganda

1. Contractors All Risks (CAR) Insurance

The most critical insurance for any construction project. Covers physical loss or damage to works under construction. Most UNRA and KCCA contracts require CAR as a contractual obligation. Typical premium: 0.3 to 0.8% of contract value per year.

2. Workers Compensation Insurance

Required under Uganda's Workers' Compensation Act โ€” protects against claims from workers injured or killed on site. All contractors with employees must have this cover.

3. Public Liability Insurance

Covers claims from members of the public for bodily injury or property damage caused by construction activities. Essential for urban construction near roads and occupied buildings in Kampala.

4. Professional Indemnity Insurance

For engineers, architects, and project managers โ€” covers claims arising from professional errors or negligent advice. Increasingly required by sophisticated private clients.

5. Plant and Equipment Insurance

Covers loss or damage to construction plant โ€” excavators, graders, rollers, generators. Given high import costs of equipment in Uganda, this is critical.
