How Agribusinesses & Farmer Programmes Use Basket Advisory Uganda

Uganda's Agribusiness Opportunity

Agriculture accounts for over 24% of Uganda's GDP and employs more than 70% of the working population. Coffee alone generates over USD 800 million in annual export revenue. Yet despite this scale, most agribusinesses in Uganda โ€” from coffee exporters and cocoa value chain operators to fish producers and agro-input dealer networks โ€” struggle with the same fundamental challenges: tracking farmers, managing field staff payroll, measuring programme impact, and accessing finance.

Basket Advisory was built specifically to address these challenges โ€” combining agribusiness advisory services with our Jirani technology platform to give agribusinesses, NGOs, and cooperatives a complete field management solution.

The Farmer Management Problem

A coffee exporter working with 3,000 smallholder farmers across Fort Portal, Kasese, and Mbarara faces enormous operational complexity:

Most organisations do this with spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups, and paper records. The result is data loss, payment errors, and an inability to prove programme impact to buyers and funders.

How Jirani Solves This

Jirani โ€” our agribusiness mobilisation platform โ€” was built for exactly this challenge. Through Jirani, agribusiness companies and NGOs can:

Agro-Input Dealer Network Management

Uganda's agro-input dealer networks โ€” distributing seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and tools to farmers across all districts โ€” require sophisticated management. Basket Advisory works with national agro-input dealer associations to manage dealer registration, sales tracking, credit management, and training programme delivery across Uganda.

Through our Directorate of Agribusiness, we manage the full operational relationship between input suppliers, dealer networks, and end farmers โ€” ensuring inputs reach the last mile and farmer adoption is tracked and reported.

Payroll for Field Staff and Agro-Processing Workers

Coffee washing stations, cocoa fermentation centres, and fish processing facilities employ significant numbers of seasonal and permanent workers. Managing payroll for these workforces โ€” with their seasonal peaks, daily casual rates, and dispersed locations โ€” is a significant administrative burden.

Basket Advisory manages payroll for agro-processing workforces across Uganda through our Basket Payroll platform โ€” including PAYE, NSSF, and mobile money salary disbursement to workers in even the most remote growing regions.

Donor Compliance for Agribusiness NGOs

Many agribusiness programmes in Uganda are funded by USAID, GIZ, the European Union, or private foundations. These donors require rigorous financial management, impact reporting, and fiduciary compliance. Basket Advisory provides implementing partner support to agribusiness NGOs โ€” managing financial reporting, audit preparation, and programme compliance documentation.
