Sent mobile money to the wrong number? It's one of the most stressful mistakes in Uganda โ and one of the most-searched questions. The honest truth: reversing a mobile money transaction is possible but not guaranteed, and speed matters enormously. Here's exactly what to do.
Can you reverse a mobile money transaction in Uganda?
Yes, reversals are possible โ but success depends on whether the recipient has already withdrawn the money. If the funds are still sitting in the wrong person's wallet, the chance of recovery is much higher. Once cashed out, it becomes very difficult. Act immediately.
How to reverse an MTN MoMo transaction
- Do not delay. The moment you realise the error, act.
- Dial the MTN MoMo menu or call MTN customer care on 100 (or 0312120000) and report the wrong transaction.
- Provide the transaction details โ the amount, the wrong number, the time, and your transaction ID (from the confirmation SMS).
- MTN may contact the recipient to request they approve the reversal. If the money is unspent, it can often be returned.
- Keep your confirmation SMS as evidence.
How to reverse an Airtel Money transaction
- Act immediately.
- Call Airtel customer care on 100 (or 0752222222) and report the erroneous transfer.
- Give the transaction ID, amount, wrong recipient number and time.
- Airtel will attempt to contact the recipient for consent to reverse.
Why reversals sometimes fail
The networks cannot simply seize money from someone's wallet โ they generally need the recipient's consent to reverse, or the funds must still be available. If the wrong recipient has withdrawn and refuses to return the money, it becomes a matter for the police and potentially the courts, as keeping money sent in error can be an offence.
Prevention beats cure: always confirm the recipient's name that appears before approving a transfer, double-check the number, and start with a small test amount for large or first-time transfers.
For businesses sending bulk payments
If you regularly pay many people by mobile money, the risk of wrong-number errors multiplies. A proper bulk-payment process โ verifying numbers before sending and keeping clean records โ prevents most reversal headaches.
