How to Write a Resignation Letter in Uganda (Template & Notice Rules)

Resigning from a job in Uganda should be done professionally and in writing โ€” a clear resignation letter protects you, preserves the relationship, and ensures you receive everything you're owed. Here's how to write one, what to include, and the notice rules under Ugandan law.

What to include in a resignation letter

Keep it short and gracious. You do not need to explain your reasons in detail โ€” a simple, respectful letter is best.

A simple template

"Dear [Manager's name],
I am writing to formally resign from my position as [job title] at [company], effective [last working day], in line with my notice period. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had here and will do all I can to ensure a smooth handover. Thank you. Yours sincerely, [Your name]."

Notice periods under Ugandan law

Uganda's Employment Act sets minimum notice periods based on length of service โ€” generally rising from a couple of weeks for shorter service to longer for several years of employment. Your contract may specify more. Always give at least the legal or contractual minimum, in writing, to leave on good terms and protect your final entitlements.

Don't forget what you're owed when you leave

When you resign, you are still entitled to certain payments โ€” your final salary, any accrued but unused leave, and depending on your contract and the circumstances, other terminal benefits. Many employees leave money on the table simply because they don't know what they're owed.

Before you hand in your notice, know your numbers. Use our free Terminal Benefits Calculator to estimate your accrued leave, notice pay and gratuity, so you know exactly what to expect in your final pay.
